ORIGINAL REVIEW: 3.5 stars -- Phew....I was worried it was going to be full soap opera -- you know, sucks you in but never goes anywhere in the end...but at least it did move forward. Not as much as I would have liked, but still we weren't in the exact same place as the end of the previous book. And we learned a bit more about both Trystan and Mari's home life.... There was a lot of me wanting to yell at the book, but hopefully it ends with some good stuff in the next one.ON REREAD: 4 stars -- I don't have much to add. I really enjoyed seeing glimpses into both Trystan and Mari's lives, and I know how much people like to drag things out, so I was really happy with the way this one ended. I thought the miscommunication and secrets would be drawn out too long, and it was almost there, but thankfully this one ended on a high point. Can't wait to remember what happens next (b/c apparently 3.5 years is enough time for me to forget where the story headed from here).

Ok--this one I went with 5 stars even though I really only would go with 4.5, just due to the incomplete story and the series--just my pet peeve. But I went with a 5 because I love the ending to this book. Ward, you have my anxious to start book 3...I am so happy right now.
So, similar to my review of Collide, I love Ward's writing style. The alternating POV is something I like. When reading sometimes it seems like a retelling of the story, but I like it as often I am wondering what the other was thinking at that time, and ultimately, I don't need to wait for another book to find it out.
Mari and Trystan continue to be great characters IMO. Seth still annoys the heck out of me and I am really becoming fond of Tucker.
Can't say too much more---I need to get on to book 3.
Brief summary
Mari now knows that Trystan is Day Jones. He asks her to keep it a secret and she does, but now she really wants to know who's stollen Trystan's heart. Trystan thinks that Mari wants nothing to do with him, so he can't come up with the courage to tell her that he wrote the song for her and that he loves her.
What I liked
Again this was a fast read. I kept getting all giddy while reading it and thinking "just tell her for crying out loud!" The same goes for Mari. I just wanted them to tell each other their feelings.
What I didn't like
Not much. I hated that Trystan went out on a date with another girl and let her hang all over him while Mari was at the same restaurant, but that just added to the anticipation of when they'd finally get together.
Brief thoughts
Another quick and cute read from H.M. Ward. I didn't realize there's another book in this series that isn't out yet, so now I'm not-so-patiently awaiting it's release. 4.5 stars )
After the ending of Collide, I really thought that we were in for some good things to come in Backdraft. Don’t get me wrong, the book was enjoyable; it just wasn’t what I expected.
We start to learn a little bit more about Mari than we did in the first book, which I like. We also see a little bit more into Trystan’s back story. I like the development of the characters. However, there’s still a lot of back and forth “Will they or won’t they?” going on, and it got a bit old.
Things started to get more intense and more interesting toward the end, and I really liked the way the book ended, so I was ready to go right into book 3. (In all honesty, though, I really just want to fly through these so I can get back to The Arrangement!)
Okay, so this was a super short review, but it was a short book, and there isn’t a lot to say without spoilers! Sorry!
There are books that you read that you really like or love. Then there are books that really touch your heart. I have only read a few that sincerely touch something deep inside. They are the ones that stay with you after reading them. This is one of those books. I relate a lot to Mari. Pressure to be perfect, whether it's in school or something else. I think we have all been there. I was. Mari and Trystan appear to be more alike then they think. Both with trouble at home and both head over heals for each other. Right when they were going to tell one another something would happen and neither of them would. Seriously, I was ready to burst!!! I just wanted them to tell each other already!!! The comment about hooking up with someone was the best catalyst you could ask for. I also loved the Kiss Assassin! Brilliant!
Trystan is pretty much the ideal guy. Slightly damaged but, I think Mari can rescue him. I felt bad for Trystan in book 1 and that continued through Backdraft. I wanted to wrap him in a warm blanket and give him hot chocolate or something. The poor guy needs a break from real life and go somewhere else. Hopefully with Mari!! Actually, they could both use a break from their lives.
I need book 3....like yesterday. If you haven't read this series yet YOU REALLY SHOULD! It is a series of novellas that are worth reading! Will true love win? I'm honestly not sure yet. There are so many different ways this story could go. I will be anxiously waiting for the next one!
Series books [eye roll] .... yes I started something that I now have to finish. Trystan & Mari are cute characters. Their lives are relatable. This story could have been finished in far less pages and would have then followed a better arc. The story is ultimately rather slow and.... well.... can we say cliffhanger? Got pulled in enough to fork over the cash to finish. Felt a little forced to keep buying the books in the series. However, it doesn't make me overly excited to read more from this author.
